Gwen Hughes is a lifelong Florida native and a visual artist with a concentration in photography. Her work explores the graphic elements of form, shape, shadow, and light and examines humanity all around the globe. Her photographs are an expression of the beauty that she finds in the places and faces during her extensive travels. A perpetual learner, Hughes has attended nine colleges and universities. After a career in real estate brokerage, she now expresses herself through her photography and writing. Hughes has published two artist books and her work has been exhibited in a variety of venues in the United States, including the Peabody in Daytona. An award-winning member of the Art League of Daytona Beach and the Los Angeles Center of Photography, her work is held in numerous private collections.
Born very shy, I fought my disability by becoming an athlete, performer, and writer, with a focus on poetry. As a child, my mother kept a camera at the ready at all times, so hiding behind a camera came naturally. Photography gave me a new language and
purpose where every scene draws me to a timeless place and I can escape to be alone with my thoughts and feelings. My photos are a form of autobiography. They speak of me, and `for me. Revisiting the photos, I am able to return to those same places and people over time. As a poet and a photographer, my interests allow me to share, learn,
and reflect on all of my journeys through my art. For this, I am extremely grateful and joyful for the opportunities this journey has provided me.
